I would finally like to introduce to you my Robo Brothers pillow pattern. My favorite thing about this pattern is that when I showed it to my kids, they said it’s us but as robots and there are hearts because we love each other! and that was exactly what I was going for. I have named this the Robo Brothers pillow because I have boys, but the robots can really be anyone you want or just cute robots. The pattern also has a second panel that is a “control panel” with lots of buttons and display screens. And there is an option for a secret message border in Moris code, you can use a pre-made message or follow the instructions to make your own.
The pattern includes both charted instructions and fully written out instructions. If you are unfamiliar with reading inset mosaic crochet charts, I have a video tutorial on how to read them on my YouTube channel.

Inspiration and Design
Once again, the inspiration for this design goes back to the “the Story of the Yellow Purse” from my blog about the Squiggle Squares Purse or Pillow Pattern which is a story about how sometimes when things go wrong you end up with even more and better ideas. When I came up with the Squiggle Squares pattern my first iteration had a pair of robots on it. For the purse I decided to go with a simpler geometric design, but I really love the Robot characters. I put the Robot design aside for later and when I picked it back up the project experienced some scope creep.
When I started out with the design with a pair of robots, I planned to make this adorable little pillow pattern. And then I had this really cool idea that involved a little blanket (still to come, please be patient). Before publishing the pillow pattern, I thought it would be good to have a video showing people how to read an inset mosaic crochet chart, so I made the little Robot bookmark. I usually am a written-out pattern designer but for mosaic crochet I find a chart to be an easier way to express the information. I do however always include fully written out version of the pattern too because I used to find inset mosaic crochet charts really hard to wrap my head around.

When I made the panel, I found that it was a little smaller that I would like, for a pillow. So, I added a border and figured if you like robots you might also like secret messages.
Secret messages in knitting and crochet are not a new thing (here is an interesting article about knitting and codes during wartimes). I have even made small pieces with crocheted Morse code before. The not very great picture shows me in 2015 with my first morse code crochet project.
There is not a lot of space around the edge of the pillow for a secret message, but you can fit just enough morse code for a small to medium word depending on the letters included.

The pattern includes charts and instructions for the words “love”, “friend”, “robot”, or “button”. There are also detailed instructions for making your own message.
I actually designed all of this quite a while ago, but I procrastinated and got distracted by other ideas. So, I am very happy to finally be sharing the pattern with you.
Happy Crafting!
