Gauge and Measurements

Gauge is not critical for this project, the size of your snowflakes will be affected by your thread size, crochet hook, and tension.  The samples I made with the listed materials are between 3.25-5 inches (5-12.5 cm).

The Contemplations

Each snowflake in this set is named after a life skill or attribute. Todayโ€™s snowflakes and todayโ€™s contemplations are Self-Control and Perseverance.

To be honest I don’t have a great reason why this particular snowflake is named Self-Control, but I thought it was an important life skill to include. Our Taekwondo school defines Self-Control as doing the right thing even when it’s hard. Sometimes this is simple; you should not hit your big brother even when he makes you really mad. Other times this is more complicated because we must balance conflicting priorities. What is critical is acting with intent instead of impulse, making conscious choices of our actions. I think this will always be something I can improve on.

In contrast to the Self-control snowflake, I know exactly why I gave the Perseverance snowflake its name. “Branching” snowflakes are beautiful but can be very tedious, this snowflake takes patience and perseverance. Our Taekwondo school defines perseverance as never giving up, no matter what, even when you fail. The phrase “even when you fail” is always emphasized, because failure is something everyone experiences. When thinking about perseverance I think it is also important to remember that slow progress is still progress, and that sometimes you need to adjust your approach or find a different way to reach your ultimate goal.

I paired Self-Control and Perseverance because they are both about choices and goals.ย  Self-control gives direction to our energy, and perseverance carries it forward, helping us stay true to our goals even when itโ€™s hard.ย ย

Double Magic Ring: just like a normal Magic Ring with the exception of wrapping the yarn twice at the beginning instead of once.  If preferred, a standard Magic Ring can be used instead.

Back Bump: the back bump is behind the front and back loop of the chain. This is sometimes referred to as the third loop.

Stiffening Snowflakes: these have been designed to be firmly stiffened, instructions are included on pages 10-13.

Tips for Reading these Patterns

Where does that stitch go?  When the location that the stitch goes is not specified it always goes in the next stitch of the prior round.  For example: โ€œ3scโ€ means make 1sc in each of the next 3 stitches.

The next round doesnโ€™t always start where the prior round began.  This is written into the pattern, so donโ€™t panic.  However, it explains why some rounds may end with instructions such as โ€œch1, 1sc in first hdc [counts as last ch2- sp]โ€, this is how we are able to start the next round in the middle of a ch-sp without cutting the thread.

Self-Control Snowflake Instructions

Make a double magic ring

Round 1: ch1, in magic ring: 1sc, ch1 [counts as first dc], (ch6, 1dc) 5 times, ch2, tr in the ch of first dc [counts as last part of ch6-sp]. Pull magic ring tight.

Round 2: 1sc around post of tr that counts as ch-sp, * ch9, 1sc in same ch-sp, ch5, 1sc in same ch-sp, ch2, 1sc in next ch-sp, ch5, 1sc in same ch-sp; repeat from * 5 more times omitting last ch5 and 1sc. Then ch2, 1dc in the first sc [counts as last part of ch5-sp].
(24 sc, 6 ch9- sps, 12 ch5- sps, 6 ch2- sps)

Round 3: 1sc around post of dc that counts as ch-sp, ch1 [counts as first dc], 2dc around same post, * working in the next ch-9 sp โ€“ (1sc, ch3, 3dc, ch5, 3dc, ch3, 1sc), working in the next ch-5 sp โ€“ (3dc, ch2, 1sc), ch1, 1sc in the ch2-sp, ch1, working in the next ch-5 sp โ€“ (1sc, ch2, 3dc); repeat from * 5 more times omitting last 3dc, ss to ch of first dc.
