Materials

1.2-3.5g per snowflake of Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat (100% Mercerised Cotton; 25g/140m)

OR Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (100% Mercerised Cotton; 100g/560m)

Sweet Treats and Sugar Rush are the same thread just in different quantities. I have the larger quantity in white.

1.5mm crochet hook for thread or the crochet hook size that works best for you and your materials

Gauge and Measurements

Gauge is not critical for this project, the size of your snowflakes will be affected by your thread size, crochet hook, and tension.  The samples I made with the listed materials are between 3.25-5 inches (5-12.5 cm). 

The Contemplations

Each snowflake in this set is named after a life skill or attribute. Today’s snowflakes and today’s contemplations are Accountability and Honesty.

Accountability is taking responsibility for our actions. This includes whether the action was intentional or not. If you make a mess, you clean it up, if you fling your arms out with your eye closed and you accidentally smack your brother you apologize and ask if they are ok. If you make a mistake, you try and fix it. If you make a commitment, you do your very best to meet it. And when you achieve something, you can take pride in your accomplishments.

Honesty is telling the truth and acting with integrity, even when it’s difficult or no one is watching. Being honest doesn’t mean being harsh, you can tell the truth with kindness, respect, and empathy. When you speak honestly, you can focus on facts instead of judgments, offer suggestions instead of criticism, and remember that your goal is to help, not to hurt. If I put dinner on the table and am met with “eeuw, gross spinach, I’m not going to eat this” it is an honest expression of how they feel but it’s not very nice or helpful. If instead I am meet with “thanks for making dinner. I don’t really like spinach; may I have some of broccoli in the fridge to eat instead” it has the same honesty but is kind and more helpful (and a bit unrealistic but I will keep trying).

I paired Accountability with Honesty because they are the foundations of trust.  When we live by both, people know they rely on us, and we know we can rely on ourselves.

Pattern Notes

Double Magic Ring: just like a normal Magic Ring with the exception of wrapping the yarn twice at the beginning instead of once.  If preferred, a standard Magic Ring can be used instead.

Back Bump: the back bump is behind the front and back loop of the chain. This is sometimes referred to as the third loop.

Stiffening Snowflakes: these have been designed to be firmly stiffened, instructions are included on pages 10-13.

Tips for Reading these Patterns

Where does that stitch go?  When the location that the stitch goes is not specified it always goes in the next stitch of the prior round.  For example: “3sc” means make 1sc in each of the next 3 stitches.  

The next round doesn’t always start where the prior round began.  This is written into the pattern, so don’t panic.  However, it explains why some rounds may end with instructions such as “ch1, 1sc in first hdc [counts as last ch2- sp]”, this is how we are able to start the next round in the middle of a ch-sp without cutting the thread. 

Accountability Snowflake Instructions

Approximately  5in/12.5cm

Make a double magic ring

Round 1: ch1, in magic ring: 1sc, ch4 [counts as first dtr], 1dtr, * ch18, ss in seventh ch from hook [forms top-loop], ch5, ss in sixth ch from previous ss [forms middle-loop], ch5, 2dtr; repeat from * 5 more times omitting last 2dtr. Pull magic ring tight.
(12 dtr, 6 top-loops, 6 middle-loops)

Round 2: ch1, 1sc between 2-dtr, ch8 [counts as first dtrtr], *ch5, 1dtrtr between same 2-tdr, ch7, 2dc in middle-loop, working in the top-loop – (1sc, ch2, 3dc, ch5, 3dc, ch2, 1sc), 2dc in the other side of the middle loop, ch7, 1dtrtr between next 2-dtr; repeat from * 5 more times omitting last dtrtr, ss to the eighth ch of the first dtrtr. Fasten off and sew in ends.
(12 dtrtr, 60 dc, 12 sc, 12 ch5-sps, 12 ch7-sps, 12 ch2-sps)
