Gauge and Measurements
Gauge is not critical for this project, the size of your snowflakes will be affected by your thread size, crochet hook, and tension. The samples I made with the listed materials are between 3.25-5 inches (5-12.5 cm).
The Contemplations
Each snowflake in this set is named after a life skill or attribute. Todayโs snowflakes and todayโs contemplations are Attitude and Appreciation.
Attitude is how you think and feel. Having a positive attitude is really helpful in basically everything. If you have never heard of the CBT triangle it is worth looking up. In short, how you think about things effects how you feel which effects how you behave. (If you have kids Ninjas Know the CBT Triangle *affiliate link is a great little book about this).
I originally had a different name for the Attitude snowflake, but my kids told me that one of the snowflakes had to be named Attitude because “it’s really important” and I agree, so now this one is Attitude. I think it fits because this snowflake can look very different depending on how you pin it when stiffening, a bit like your Attitude changes how you see the world.
Originally the Appreciation snowflake was called Gratitude, which is one of the life skills taught in the Taekwondo class, but there is already a lovely snowflake of that name. However, I really wanted to include this concept, so I looked up Appreciation vs. Gratitude. Both involve thankfulness but there are slight differences. Generally, appreciation is more specific and external. I like this Quote from Happier Humans:
Gratitude is something we should learn to live in a state of every dayโฆ while appreciation gives others specific recognition for their part in your happiness or success at the moment they occur.
Appreciation the snowflake has stacks of circles, like good things building on each other. When we express our appreciation for someone or something, it builds on the happiness around us.
I paired Attitude and Appreciation because they are both about mindset. A positive attitude helps us face both challenges and the mundane with resilience. Appreciation reminds us to notice the good and value others. Together they build on each other and increase the joy in the world.

Pattern Notes
Double Magic Ring: just like a normal Magic Ring with the exception of wrapping the yarn twice at the beginning instead of once. If preferred, a standard Magic Ring can be used instead.
Back Bump: the back bump is behind the front and back loop of the chain. This is sometimes referred to as the third loop.
Stiffening Snowflakes: these have been designed to be firmly stiffened, instructions are included on pages 10-13.

Tips for Reading these Patterns
Where does that stitch go? When the location that the stitch goes is not specified it always goes in the next stitch of the prior round. For example: โ3scโ means make 1sc in each of the next 3 stitches.
The next round doesnโt always start where the prior round began. This is written into the pattern, so donโt panic. However, it explains why some rounds may end with instructions such as โch1, 1sc in first hdc [counts as last ch2- sp]โ, this is how we are able to start the next round in the middle of a ch-sp without cutting the thread.
