Toffee Garden Cowl & Candy Floss

Scheepjes has a brand-new yarn, Candy Floss. And I have a brand-new design to go with it! The toffee garden cowl is a simple corner to corner buttoned cowl with sewn on leave and flower elements for a three-dimensional embroidery effect.

Yarn

The star of this pattern is Candy floss, Scheepjes newest yarn.  Candy Floss is a GOTS-certified 100% organic Mercerized cotton thread yarn and a 2-ply embroidery thread.  It comes in 52 shades based on the Catona Color range and is available in five smallish color packs: Raspberry, Toffee, Butterscotch, Blueberry, and Mint.

While I love all the color packs, and hope to have them all at some point, I was drawn to the Toffee color pack as these are some of my favorite โ€œneutralsโ€.

To provide a sense of scale, Candy Floss is a bit thinner than Sweet Treats. When I crochet with thread I like to use my great grandmotherโ€™s hooks.  For Sweet treats I use a hook marked with a 7 (~ 1.5mm) and for Candy Floss I found the hook marked with a 10 (I believe this is ~1mm) to be my favorite. When I make the same leaf pattern in Candy Floss the leaf is about 75% the size of the Sweet Treats leaf.

The Design

What came to mind when I received my beautiful Toffee Garden color pack was embroidery.  So decided to pair the Organic Candy Floss thread with Organicon Yarn for an embroidered effect.

My design sample

To place the flowers and leaves on I decided on a basic button cowl.  I was inspired by the Ribbed Cowl by Stacey Leighty for the general shape of the cowl because I liked the flexibility that the buttons provided on how it could be worn.  The โ€œcorner-to-cornerโ€ crochet fabric is perfect for a button design as the natural holes in the fabric can be used as buttonholes.  I also find โ€œcorner-to-cornerโ€ to be a satisfying low-concentration project.

I have made my cowl on the larger side for a cowl, about 28x102cm (11x40in), however, this pattern is easy to customize to your personal preferences.  If you would like a smaller cowl just make the rectangle smaller, or if you want something bigger you can make a much larger scarf or wrap by increasing the size.

In the pattern I have listed the numbers of each flower and leaf that I made, but I encourage you to make as many or as few as you would like in any color combinations of your liking.  You can make just a few and add a tiny accent or make a bunch and wrap yourself in a beautiful bouquet.

Where I live a cowl out of Organicon makes a lot of sense as it is not often very cold here. (yesterday it was 77F/25C).  However, if you prefer something warmer this pattern also works well with Scheepjes Metropolis as the cowl base.

More Flowers Everywhere

The flowers and leaves can also be sewn on to other objects.  I put a few extras that I had on a simple linen top.  If I get around to it, I would love to add a few to a hat or a cardigan.

More alternative

And if crocheting in thread is not something you like to do the leaves and flowers also work up very well in a fingering weight yarn.  This cowl I make with Bamboo soft for the cowl and Catona for the flowers and leaves. I left off the scalloped border on this sample. I think a cowl made entirely from metropolis would come out beautiful too.
