Snowfall 2023 A Rainbow

I thought it would be fun to design my snowflakes a little different this year, so I have designed them in color and to work in both thread and Catona yarn.  In thread these snowflakes are between 2-3 inches (5.1โ€“7.6 cm) or in yarn they are 4-5 inches (5.1โ€“7.6 cm).  I get a surprising number of requests for smaller snowflakes, and I have wanted to make some heavier gauge snowflakes similar to some of the snowflakes I have from my great grandma.  The slightly smaller snowflake size felt like the perfect opportunity to make the chunkier snowflakes as they are still a reasonable size.

I have made these Snowflakes in color and also in white as my typical snowflakes. You, of course, may make these snowflakes in any color that you preferer.

Crochet Along Information

The Crochet Along (CAL) will start November 20th and two new patterns will be released every other day. Each day one pattern will be available for free on my blog and the other will be available as part of an eBook on Ravelry. If you would like to Crochet along with all the Snowflakes you can purchase the eBook on Ravelry any time after the 20th of November and it will be updated to add the new patterns each day of the CAL.

I will update the links below when each Snowflake is released. The complete eBook will also be available on Etsy on November 30th after all snowflakes have been released.

Thread or Yarn

This year I made my snowflakes with Scheepjes Catona (100% Mercerised Cotton; 50g/125m) and Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat (100% Mercerised Cotton; 25g/140m) Or Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (100% Mercerised Cotton; 100g/560m). Sweet Treats and Sugar Rush are the same thread just in different quantities. I have the larger quantity for white and the smaller for all my colors.

For all my white snowflakes I used 105 Bridal White.

For the Colored Snowflakes in Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat I used 786 Fuchsia, 115 Hot Red, 252 Watermelon, 189 Royal Orange, 208 Yellow Gold, 280 Lemon, 245 Green Yellow, 606 Grass Green, 514 Jade, 253 Tropic, 146 Vivid Blue, 282 Ultra Violet. Catona and Maxi Sweet Treats come in most of the same colors, so I used matching colors for all the Catona snowflakes except for 114 Shocking Pink and 389 Apple Green. Apple Green is available in Sweet Treats but I really liked the Grass green.

If you are working in Maxi Sweet Treats thread you will need about 0.9-1.3g of thread per snowflake.

If you are working in Catona Yarn you will need about 3.4-5.2g of yarn per snowflake.

Inspiration and Names

The inspiration for my snowflakes this year come from three different ideas that all came together:

  1. I get a surprising number of requests for smaller snowflakes 2-3 inches
  2. I really enjoyed the heavier gauge of the Snowflake my great grandmother made on my tree last year and I wanted more “chunky” snowflakes.
  3. I really wanted to play with all the pretty colors of Scheepjes Maxi Sweet treats thread.

I found that the smaller snowflakes were the perfect opportunity to make heavier gauge snowflakes and still have them a reasonable size. Scheepjes Catona and Maxi Sweet Treats come in most of the same colors, so making both the thread and yarn snowflakes colorful was easy to do. I still made all the snowflakes in white too, but it was fun to do something different.

I had a hard time deciding on names for these snowflakes. The last 2 year I have come up with my naming theme about halfway through designing the set. Some snowflakes are named after they are designed, and some are inspired by the names and designed accordingly. This year I didn’t name any of the snowflakes until after they were complete. I considered naming them after colors since mine would be colorful. However, the pattern shows white snowflakes next to the instructions so because I was able to get clearer photos of the white snowflakes. It felt odd to show a white snowflake that was named “Magenta”. So, I decided instead to name them after colorful birds.
