Scrumptious Tiles Blanket, YARN – The After Party 204

Surprise! I have designed another new blanket pattern published by Scheepjes Yarns

I love Scheepjes yarn color packs, they can be a great way to explore a new yarn and see all the shades. So, when I had the opportunity to design a blanket for the Scheepjes Scrumptious Color pack I was excited. Scheepjes Scrumptious Yarn combines acrylic with recycled plastic and comes in 80 individual shades with adorably delicious names.  The color pack of Scrumptious yarn contains 30g of all 80 colors and was originally released as an exclusive for the Scheepjes Color Lab CAL by Rachele Carmona (Cypress Textiles) but now is available as a color pack you can purchase any times.

“Make the most of a Scrumptious Colour Pack and use every ball to create a striking blanket that will keep the whole family cosy!

With a nod to tumbling blocks, this irregular patchwork design will appeal to intermediate and experienced crocheters who enjoy combining colours and interesting stitches to create texture and visual impact. Popcorn stitches and front and back post variations of half, treble and double treble stitches are used to crochet the different shaped motifs. Each piece is then finished with a border. A complete colour layout schematic complements the full written pattern and illustrates how to arrange the motifs to create an extra-large blanket measuring 203 x 168cm.” – From the Scheepjes Website

The Design

After deciding on the shapes, I wanted I designed several different motifs in each shape.  Each motif uses two colors and if the colors alternate the yarn is carried not cut to avoid excessive ends.

For both the diamond and square shapes there is a simple striped motif and a center out striped motif.  For the square shape I also designed a fun geometric pattern that I quite enjoy making.  For the Diamond shape there are also 3 more textured variations that are all variations on the same theme.

The pattern includes a chart and diagram with the exact colors and placement that I used for each motif.  For such a large blanket I enjoyed the variety that the different motifs provided, the simpler motifs sped up the making and the more detailed ones kept my interest.  If you prefer some of the motifs more than others, you can easily change them up. Just keep in mind that some motifs (hint, square B and diamond E) use up more yarn than others.

I spent a lot of time playing around with the layout on this blanket.  I drew out the pattern on an old clean sheet with washable marker so that I could easily place motifs within the layout.  This allowed me to safety pin the motifs in place for easy storage when I wasn’t working on in.

One of my favorite ways to join motifs is (UK-dc/US-sc, ch1, skip 1) on the back side.  I find it to be a quick way to join motifs and I like the way the tidy little stitches look on the front side.  The join is described in the pattern but if you are unfamiliar with this technique, I recommend looking at this tutorial by Dedri Uys on Look What I Made.

I am very pleased with how this pattern turned out and hope you enjoy it too.

Extra Information

This morning after the pattern was released, I saw several questions about how much yarn was used in each motif and how much of the color pack was used to make the blanket. So, I thought I would add some extra information for those that are interested.

Here are the approximate weights per motif. Please keep in mind that these weights are with my particular tension and if your tension is significantly different than mine your weights will be different.

  • Square A: 8.0g
  • Square B: 11.3g
  • Square C: 9.0g
  • Diamond A: 7.0g
  • Diamond B/C: 7.2g
  • Diamond D: 8.8g
  • Diamond E: 10.1g

The blanket is composed of 101 square motifs and 142 diamond motifs. It was also designed to use up as much of the color pack as I could manage. I weighted my scraps (pictured below) and had about 300 grams remaining.

If you would like a smaller blanket the size can easily be adjusted by making fewer motifs.

Happy Crafting!

    Hi Jessica,
I just started the Scrumptious Tiles blanket, loving the finished product you made. However, I was wondering, you wouldn’t by any chance also have a stitch chart for these, would you?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Regards,
    Wendy

      Hi Wendy,
If by stitch chart you mean a stitch abbreviation guide then yes there is one at the beginning of the pattern. If by stitch chart you mean a chart/diagram version of the pattern then no this is a written pattern only. If you are finding any part of the instructions are changing to follow I recommend joining the Scheepjes International Facebook group. Scheepjes owns the pattern and there are a lot of people in that group able to provide a lot of support.
